Remember when you were a kid, I know for some of us that is ancient history but try to think way back to what it really felt like to be a kid. Can you remember the feeling of utter starvation after a hot summer day of swimming when it felt like you might really die of hunger en route from the pool to the dinner table? Did you ever come home from school on a snowy day, smell something amazing wafting from the kitchen and decide on the spot that your mom was the best mom…ever? Remember when you had to ask your parents before you turned on the tv or wore your new sweater or had another cookie? I can remember thinking, “When I grow up I will eat as many cookies as I want!” (a philosophy that has not served me well, I might add, but that is a story for another time). Oh, and Christmas! Remember Christmas as a kid…the smell of turkey (when you didn’t have to cook it!), the twinkling Christmas lights (everywhere!)…the anticipation levels so high you almost couldn’t take it, every wrapped gift had such possibility!
And do you remember that feeling of joy in its purest form when, once in a while, you were given the perfect toy? Not the toy you wanted because all your friends had it or the one you begged for because you saw it on tv but the toy that you got and instantly it became a beloved part of you, just like that. For me, it was a beautiful Madam Alexandra doll named Alex and for my kids, it’s been The Sled.
Who knew that when my parents gave my kids sleds, they would hit the Perfect Toy Jackpot?! I remember enjoying sledding when I was a kid, but I’d get cold pretty quickly and want to head inside…this is nothing like that. These guys are hardcore. The kids have officially become meteorologists…it’s like living with Al Roper. They check the forecast everyday, willing it to say “Snow”! In fact, they have become so interested in the weather that I have stopped checking altogether for myself, no need. If I need to know what the forecast is I just ask one of the kids. On Sunday, Lauren informed me that I was inappropriately dressed because the high was “going to be 50”. On Monday, Sam asked his dad if he thought his Wednesday evening cello lesson would be cancelled because it was going to snow (Adam had no idea it was going to snow on Wednesday).
When it snows, Sam and Lauren, who generally are not fast movers in the morning, get up early to hit the hill before breakfast and I do suppose that most of their physical education credits this year will be derived from the great sport of sledding.
Their sheer joy and elation has led me to believe that the only real advantage to growing up is that you get to get married and put together your own little brood of Sledders, or Snowboarders as they call themselves (even though they are usually seated and do not own any actual snow boards)…
Well, that and you can have a cookie any time you want…

Oh Holy Night,
The stars are brightly shining,
It is the night go our dear Saviour’s birth…
Long lay the world in sin and error pining,
Til He appeared and the soul felt its worth…
A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices
From yonder breaks a new and glorious morn..
Fall on your knees, oh hear the Angel voices,
Oh, Night Divine, Oh, Night when Christ was born…
Oh, Night Divine…
May you all know the indescribable Joy and Mercy of His birth!
“Suddenly a great company of the heavenly hosts appeared with the angel. praising God and saying,
‘Glory to God in the Highest and on Earth Peace Goodwill toward Men” ~ Luke 2:13-14
~Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

So last week I got this brilliant idea that it would be really fun to make something for Christmas presents for my extended family. I scoured the internet looking for a (relatively) last minute Christmas gift that the kids and I could make ourselves and came up with nada, niltch, goose egg…but then I was perusing one of my favorite blogs and lo and behold there was my answer, Monogramed Mugs…which you can check out here!
After a quick search to find out what a Porcelaine pen was and a quick trip to Michael’s to pick one up (the last one!)…we were on our way to creating some fine personalized mugs…
First, we assembled all of the necessary tools:
Porcelaine pen
scissors
transfer paper
pen or pencil
stencils or initials printed out in the font and size you’d like to use
tape
plain white mugs, we picked ours up at the Goodwill
delicious cup of Chai tea (optional)
Cut a piece of transfer paper the same size as your initial.
Tape both transfer paper and your printed (or stenciled) initial onto the cup with the transfer paper on the bottom side touching the mug.
Next, take a pen or pencil (we found a pen worked best for us) and using firm pressure, trace over the letter.
Now, gently remove tape and both pieces of paper. You should have an outline of the initial on the cup.
Now you can take your Porcelaine pen and outline the letter and then, being careful not to smudge the outline, you can fill in the letter any way you like, we chose to follow the design suggested on the website using smooth strokes all in one direction which looks like this…
But you can also just outline the letter and leave it unfilled.
When you have all your letters the way you want them (you can wipe them off and start over as many times as you need to), set them aside to dry for 24 hours.
The next day you just pop them into a 300 degree oven for 35 minutes and that’s it! The baking should make the letters dishwasher resistant, I’ll let you know how resistant they really are…
And here they are all finished! A cute and easy project that you can do with the Munchkins just in time to get under the tree!

Meet Sam.
Sam is my adorable seven-year old son.
Sam is hilarious, he makes us laugh, everyday.
For some reason he flares his nostrils when he smiles for a picture.
- When asked what he wants to be when he grows up he thinks carefully and replies, “A Chef, A Pastor, The President, and Spiderman”
- Milk is his drink of choice, chocolate if he can get it, shaken, not stirred.
- Sam is a breakfast man who orders his eggs “over easy on hash browns” even at home.
Here are some of Sam’s library book choices…notice a pattern, do we?
He felt that this book fulfilled the requirement I gave him to read a biography…and I must admit, on this one, he had me.
Sam has an inexplicable love for the hip hop scene which makes no sense because our family is about as buttoned up and preppy as they come.
- Sam thinks mechanically. He’s always trying to think of a new and better way to do things.
- He keeps a notebook of his greatest invention ideas.
- Sam has a very tender heart, and often cries when other people get hurt because “he just feels really sorry for them”.
Recently, I overheard him softly talking to our dog…this is an exact quote, “I am so sorry to have to tell you this Dash, but you’re just not going to be a German Shepherd. I’m so sorry.”
- He cried at the end of A Christmas Carol because Scrooge “got back his hope”.
- This precious boy gives me hope.
Am I madly in love, you ask?
Oh, that doesn’t even begin to cover it…
